Back to the Real World...

Tomorrow I head back to work.  I love being cocooned in the sense of timeless relaxation and rest that comes with Christmas vacation.  Sometimes I have no idea what day it is.  We spend large chunks of time in our pajamas.  We eat when we're hungry, play when we're bored, and sleep when we're tired, and NOT because we have to adhere to the crazy school time schedule.  I guess all things have to come to an end.

On Sunday, I could feel the inevitable end of break approaching, and as it happens every year, I get a crazy urge to organize the heck out of our house.  I have this thought that if everything is just so, our reentry into our regular schedule will be a little bit smoother.  And maybe it is for a little bit, but the crazies always come back.

At any rate, on Sunday the Christmas decorations came down and the regular decor went back up.  I hate to see the holidays go, but it is so refreshing in so many ways to put the house back in order and go back to the clean and orderly.

Yesterday, I cleaned out under the bathroom sinks, and I went to Target to stock up on supplies to reorganize and refresh cleaning supplies in each area of the house.  Then I REALLY went crazy and did a years worth of shredding and filing financial papers.  WHY do I put this job off so long?!!  It was boring as all get out, but at least it's done, and we will be ready to tackle the taxes soon.

Jeff has been home way more this vacation than he has been able to do in the past, and it has been heavenly.  I love getting to spend this time with him before the horrors of tax season begin.  It's the main reason I hate January.  It steals my husband away to the office.

Sigh...it's time, I know.  But I am going to be dragging my heels the whole way.

In Need of Mary Poppins

Jeff and I attended an Open House down the street from us yesterday. The house is very similar to ours in layout and style, so we wanted to see what their asking price was, and chat up their agent a bit while we there. We got some good information, but we also got super overwhelmed.

The people that live in the house are a young married couple, without kids. Which apparently gives you time to beautifully decorate your house. And it looks like things stay where you put them, and no one tracks dirt on your carpet, and nobody spills sippy cups on the carpet. When I say to you the house was immaculate, I am totally understating it's perfection. I came out doubting that people actually inhabited the space.

When we walked back through our own front door, I saw the carpet I have been battling for three years. The dings in the paint from people throwing toy cars. The clutter accumulated by three boys. And when I thought about trying to get our house ready to put on the market and show, I fainted away on the floor. Okay, now I am exaggerating, but at that moment I wished I was a fainter, because it would have fit the situation perfectly.

So, I picked a room to attack first and ended up with our storage room. If I was being truthful with you, I would admit that there were boxes in that room that I have not opened one time since we moved in, and that the crap is astounding piled up against the walls. Instead I will lie to you and say that of course every piece of flotsom and jetsom in that room was meaningful and purposeful.

Seriously. Apparently in high school I strongly believed it was EXTREMELY necessary to save every scrap of paper I ever wrote on because MY THOUGHTS WERE THAT IMPORTANT! Someday this note to a person in 3rd period I no longer remember COULD save the world. At least I got a good laugh out of it. My idealism was slightly nauseating, but provided great entertainment value, especially to my husband who spent the next few hours snorting uncontrollably with laughter, spurting phrases like, "I love him so much! He's my SOULMATE!!!" My advice to the young? Throw away that crap before your husband can use it as blackmail.

Sadly, we aren't done with that room yet. Happily, we do have a pile of 10 bags of trash, and a pile of things I am going to list on Craig's List. We're going to keep plugging tonight, and maybe in 10 years my house will be presentable for the general public. Until then, I will leave you with this gem. Presenting MOI, at my senior prom.

Unpacking...FInally

I spent this morning cleaning out our guest bedroom. I got a new sewing machine for Christmas, and this seemed to be the best place to set it up. The guest room is probably the only place in the house where I can start a project, and leave things out for a work in progress, thanks to the lock on the door. Thankfully for my sewing, we don't often have overnight guests.

Somehow during our move to this house almost 3 years ago, several stacks of boxes were relegated to the closet in this room. Most of them having nothing to do with sewing, or guests. Due mostly to being a baby machine and baby care taker for our first few years in our home, I haven't sewn a stitch or had any inclination to dig out the closet until today.

I am hoping to change that in the New Year, so today we dug in. I found huge stacks of fabric, most of it I have no idea where it came from. It did get me itching to start a new project and fire up my new machine, so hopefully there will be some me time in 2009.

Three boxes and four bags of trash later, I can now see the floor in the closet, and my sewing supplies are neatly unpacked and arranged. I love organizing, so it was actually an enjoyable project. Now...if I can just find some time to do some quilting, I will REALLY be happy!
