At the beginning of the summer, I set a goal for myself. I was really going to amp up my exercise routine, and watch carefully what I ate. My main goals were to raise my HDL cholesterol level through cardiac exercise, and to slowly start loosing weight.
My plan? I have been running 3 miles a day, 5 days a week. I have been doing some light weight lifting. I have been really limiting my calories and fat intake.
The results? I have GAINED 3.5 pounds.
That's right. I GAINED WEIGHT. It is really difficult to keep up such a strenuous routine when it has absolutely no results. Do you suppose there is something wrong with me?
The only positive has been that I do feel stronger, and my endurance is getting much better. However, I really don't want to gain more weight. I am going to keep it up for a couple more weeks to see if I might be the only person on earth who actually gains weight from exercising.

Not Much
Not much is new today, other than I am so excited to start a new weekly water pilates class tonight. Normally I try to stay away from organized exercise classes because I am the world's most uncoordinated person. I stay away not just for my own safety, but for the other participants as well. Hopefully the water will help to control my movements a bit, although I will be asked to use a weighted dumb bell so that could be fatal.
Hopefully this will help to take off the three extra pounds that have crept up. They are not welcome on these here hips.

Whack!
As I mentioned yesterday, I was feeling disgusted with myself after trying on clothes. I was feeling fat, and disgusted that I have been dieting and working out steadily for almost 10 months now, but haven't lost nearly the weight I would like. The further along in the day I got, the more I obsessed I became, and the worse I felt.
On the way into the gym this morning, Evan turned to me and said, "You're so fit Mom!" Wow. What a great smack in the face. I may not be loosing weight right and left, but I am being a good example for my kids. Since we've joined the gym, they've witnessed me having a regular pattern of exercise.
Smack in the face number two came from Oprah as I was reading my O! magazine while on the eliptical machine. They had several stories on breast cancer this month, which reminded me several times that a great form of prevention (critical for me with my family history) is exercise and diet. So, despite not looking like a super model, my insides are healthier than when I started in January.
I am so thankful for my little Evan, for Oprah, and for God taking the time to hit me over the head this morning with an important message. I am going to keep it up, even when I feel like I'm getting nowhere. Sometimes, the results are on the inside, or even in your family.
